What is Hyperbaric Oxygen?

Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) refers to pure oxygen inhaled by an organism under a high-pressure environment at ambient pressure. 

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment administered in an environment with pressure exceeding one atmospheric pressure (1 ATA) where patients breathe pure oxygen. 

This method elevates blood oxygen tension and enhances oxygen-carrying capacity through increased oxygen concentration in inspired air. It improves tissue oxygenation and oxygen reserves, effectively addressing hypoxia caused by endogenous or exogenous factors to compensate for physiological oxygen deficits.In contrast, conventional oxygen therapy is delivered under normal atmospheric pressure with lower oxygen concentration and partial pressure, yielding inferior therapeutic effects compared to HBOT.

How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy medically enhances the body's natural healing process. 100% oxygen is inhaled in a controlled chamber where atmospheric pressure is increased up to three times more than normal.

These pressurized conditions allow your lungs to gather more oxygen than when you are breathing normally. Your blood then carries this oxygen throughout your body, improving circulation, fighting bacteria, promoting healing, and stimulating stem cells.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Healthy?

What Happens after Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Toward the end of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, your healthcare provider will gradually decrease the pressure inside your chamber so your body can adjust to the pressure outside of the chamber.

Your healthcare provider will remove you from the chamber or help you remove your mask or hood. Then, they'll examine some of your vital signs, including your blood pressure and pulse, and check your ears. If you have diabetes, they'll test your blood sugar (glucose).

Once your healthcare provider determines that you no longer need monitoring, you can change back into your clothes and leave.

You may feel sleepy after hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It isn't necessary to have a family member or friend drive you home, but it might be a good idea.
